Confident readers are those who are reading chapter books without too much assistance although many still enjoy being read to as well. We choose books carefully so that an 8 year old just taking their first solo steps isn’t over-faced and that a 12 year old isn’t bored. It’s a fine balance but years of children’s bookselling mean that we have plenty of experience of finding the right book for the right reader.

Again, if you’re not sure which option is best, drop us a line with some information about the reader you’re buying the subscription for and we’ll guide you towards the best option. Giving feedback on the postcard we send out with the first book will also help us to tweak future choices.

When you order this subscription option, each month we’ll carefully choose a suitable book taking into account the information you’ve given us about the reader’s tastes.  It will be sent out, beautifully wrapped.  With the first book we enclose a slip asking for feedback so that we can glean more about the recipient’s tastes which will help us customise our future choices.  Obviously, props shown in the photographs are not included and although the packaging shown is indicative, it may vary.

  • Developing Readers

We don’t like age-ranges and so in our award-winning bookshop we divided children’s books into Developing and Confident Reader sections. It worked well and didn’t put pressure on children or parents as to what they should be reading. As a rough guide, developing readers are children who are at school and starting to read by themselves up to about 8 or so. They will be having a reading book from school to practice with but they probably still enjoy being read to and they'll be able to explore more complex stories. This is when we introduce them to their first chapter books, with plenty of dialogue and adventure to stimulate their imaginations.

  • Contemporary Fiction (paperback)

For years, we’ve read voraciously, assessing new fiction titles to see if they would work in our bookshop and now for Glenogle & Bell. That experience means that our contemporary fiction package is perfect for the bookworm in your life. We’ll send them highly anticipated debut novels, eagerly awaited new titles from award-winning writers and overlooked gems that we think deserve a wider readership. By sending a postcard asking for feedback with the first book we’ll be able to tailor our choices more closely to the reader’s tastes.

We offer this as a paperback or hardback option.
